THE ELEPHANT IN THE DARKROOM
THE CURIOUS CASE OF MAUŠA FLIGELIS
Dating from the mid-1930s, the above photograph features from left to right the Lithuanian Jewish photographer Mauša Fligelis (1910-2007), his mother Mira/Miriam/Mirjama Fligelienė née Aronovitz (1866-1941), his forest merchant father David/Dovydas Fligelis (1870-1941) and his elder sister, the seamstress Riva Fligalytė/Šifrinienė (1908-1941). The 8.8 cm x 13.8 cm is one of a currently unknown number of photographic prints and just over 100 original photographic glass plate negatives that were originally owned by Mauša Fligelis and that today form part of the permanent collection at the Aušros Museum in the Lithuanian city of Šiauliai, where the photographer lived and worked.
